People Americana

Is the theory of evolution a racist idea?
I know that its just a theory and doesn’t have much evidence to support its ideas but some people these days really get into it.
I believe that God created each of the three races independently and that is why the Asian, European, and African races are so different from each other. Others think that evolution is what made the European race so much more advanced than the others.
But with that said the theory of evolution only says that African Americana’s haven’t fully evolved yet. For at least hundreds of years Africans have lived with Europeans in the same climate yet the Africans aren’t showing any evidence of evolving. This is proof that they must be a different creation and this also disproves that evolution is possible.
So why do people still follow the old racist theory of evolution?
you do have a point there.

Songs of trail and prairie and of the Farmers’ Alliance, white man’s yarns and Indian tales, pioneer Nebraska folk customs, sayings, proverbs, beliefs, children’s games, cooking, and cures–these wondrously entertaining kaleidoscopic reflections of the people and environment that were inspirations of the classic literature of Mari Sandoz and Willa Cather–to name two–could be a model for Americana collectors in other states to emulate. . . . At the Jazz Band Ball $48.91 The very best witnesses in the worlds of the law, aesthetic evaluation, social contexts of imposing significance, and artistic public performance are those who accurately understand what they have seen or what they are seeing. Nat Hentoff has been and continues to be a star witness in every one of those arenas. One of the greatest contributions of his jazz writing is that he has never felt the need to condescend to black people or to let the dictates of sociology diminish the universal significance of what they do when they do it well. Nat knows that so many jazz musicians have done what they do superbly, quite often expressing themselves beyond the narrows of color. As sensitive to the Americana of jazz as he is to its transcendent revelations about the sound of the human heart, Nat Hentoff is part of our American luck. –Stanley Crouch |

Designs on the Heart $35 It is a story that has gone down in the annals of American art history: a New Yorker visiting upstate Hoosick Falls is entranced by four pictures hanging in the window of a drugstore. Investigating further, he learns they are the handiwork of a 78-year-old widow. Thus begins the rise to fame of Grandma Moses–farmwife, painter, and unlikely celebrity. In this book Karal Ann Marling, distinguished observer of American visual culture, looks at Grandma Moses as a cultural phenomenon of the postwar period and explores the meaning of her subject matter–and her astonishing fame. What did the Greatest Generation see in her simple renderings of people, young and old, tapping maple trees for syrup, making apple butter, gliding across snowy fields on sleighs? Why did Bob Hope, Irving Berlin, and Harry Truman all love her–and the art czars of New York openly despise her? Through the flood of Moses merchandise–splashed across Christmas cards, dishware, yard goods, and gewgaws of every kind–Marling traces the resonances that these primitive images struck in an America awkwardly adjusting to a new era of technology, suburbia, and Cold War tensions. Between the cultural ephemera, folklore, song, and history embedded in Moses’ paintings and the potent advertising shorthand for Americana that her images rapidly became, this book reveals the widespread longing for the memories, comforts, and small victories of a mythic, intimate American past tapped by the phenomenon–in art and commerce alike–of Grandma Moses. |

Expose Of Polygamy $29.95 After the 1872 publication of Expose”, Fanny Stenhouse became a celebrity in the cultural wars between Mormons and much of America. An English convert, she had grown disillusioned with the Mormon Church and polygamy, which her husband practiced before associating with a circle of dissident Utah intellectuals and merchants. Stenhouse”s critique of plural marriage, Brigham Young, and Mormonism was also a sympathetic look at Utah”s people and honest recounting of her life. Before long, she created a new edition, titled Tell It All, which ensured her notoriety in Utah and popularity elsewhere but turned her thoughtful memoir into a more polemical, true expose” of Polygamy. Since 1874, it has stayed in print, in multiple, varying editions. The original book, meanwhile, is less known, though more readable. Tracing the literary history of Stenhouse”s important piece of Americana, Linda DeSimone rescues an important autobiographical and historical record from the baggage notoriety brought to it. |

His Own People $29.95 Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) was one of the most popular writers of the early 20th Century, who first achieved acclaim with his historical romance Monsieur Beaucaire (1900). But his more characteristic work was found in such novels as The Gentleman from Indiana (1899), The Conquest of Canaan (1905), and the trilogy consisting of Turmoil (1915), The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) and The Midlander (1921). He won two Pulitzer Prizes for novels, for The Magnificent Ambersons and for Alice Adams (1921). The Magnificent Ambersons was memorably filmed by Orson Welles in 1942. Tarkington is also noted for several charming, idealized novels about childhood and adolescence, such as Penrod (1914) and Seventeen (1916), which occur squarely in the middle of the line of literary development that leads from Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer up to Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine. They are classics of period Americana. |

Iconic America $24.98 What is America? It”s Monopoly and Mickey Mouse, but also Sinatra and Fred Astaire. It”s the Declaration of Independence, but it”s also Barbie and Playboy, Winslow Homer and Rudi Gernreich”s topless bathing suit. This juxtaposition of images reflects America”s unique eclecticism, and the unprecedented influence that the images of America”s pop culture have had on the world. This book works as a great treasury of Americana, and as a mischievously enjoyable observation on all things truly American. Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and famous adman George Lois have crafted an enlightening book, searching American history to find over 350 people, symbols, and things of import. The Cowboy Boot Book $19.95 From bikers to high-fashion models to buckaroos on the wide open range, people all over the world are wearing cowboy boots and loving them. Ever since the 1920s, when Tom Mix first surfaced as a cowboy hero, boots have gone through surges of popularity. Up till now, the highest point was about 1955, when Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and western music were embraced as icons of the American dream. Boots have always been worn by working cowboys, but now they are a fashion statement. With the wide selection of leathers (cowhide, kangaroo, snake–even armadillo, bullfrog and chicken) and colors available, a renissance of artful boot making has taken place. You can pick your boots righ off the shelf, choosing from the classic tall tops by boot factories such as Justin, Nocona, Tony Lama and Lucchese, or from the nostalgic peewees–colorful reproductions of 1930s and 1940s odels. But if you really need to let the world know exactly who you are, or if you need to express yourself or take a stand with what you stand in, author Tyler Beard advises, go to a custom bootmaker. It cost about the same as a few visits toa good therapist but it’s a lot more fun. In this book, Beard retells a lively history of the bootmaking industry and introduces today’s best bootmakers and their most artistic styles. The artful photography of Jim Arndt, combined with Beard’s easy entertaining style makes The Cowboy Boot Book a classic in western Americana. |

The Papers of Benjamin Franklin $94.22 In the four months following the January 20, 1783, armistice that ended the War for American Independence, Franklin was remarkably energetic as he helped oversee the transition to peace and waged a multifaceted campaign to publicize the ideals of the new nation. He distributed his richly symbolic Libertas Americana medal, worked toward the publication of his French edition of the American state constitutions, and fielded scores of letters from people all over Europe who sought to emigrate, to establish trade connections with the United States, to become consuls, and to offer congratulations and advice. |
